Here are some simple instructions on how you can check your sump pump to make sure its working:
Notes: There may be water already in the sump basket. This is normal. The water may be murky or discolored, depending on soil conditions… but it is safe to touch. (NOTE: Sump pumps are not suitable for receiving waste from plumbing fixtures such as showers or laundry tubs. The waste from these types of fixtures is considered “Gray Water,” and requires a sewage ejector pump, adequate venting and connection to the plumbing waste system.) DO NOT USE THIS METHOD TO TEST SEWAGE EJECTOR PUMPS.
1. Remove the sump cover. You may have to wiggle it a bit to get around the discharge pipe.
2. Locate the raise the plastic float mechanism. And lift upwards with your hand. This will activate the float switch and the pump should begin running. If there is water in the sump basket, you will notice the water going down. When the water level in the basket nears the bottom,  let go of the float switch. Some pumps have a seperate “ball float” attached to a cord, others are attached or did mounted directly to the side of the pump. It will usually be made out of plastic in a cylindrical shape like a small pop can with a hole through the middle of it. There will be a send metal rod going through the center of the float on the attached type float devices. in either case, the ball or float switch has to be raised manually by physically grabbing the float and raising it until the pump engages. If you hear the pump motor begin to run, the pump float switch is working correctly.
3. Check to ensure the discharge pipe draining properly away from your house. The opening of the should be free of and debris and above ground. It is also a good idea to place a small metal screen over the opening to prevent clogging for small animals from burrowing or nesting inside the pipe
NOTE: in most cities, it is against city code to have a sump pump discharge into the sanitary sewer system, I.e., a floor drain, laundry tub or directly into the plumbing system within your home. (This is not just a silly code, it is there to protect you and your home as well as our lakes, rivers and fresh water system.)
We recommend that you test your sump pump periodically at least once a year.

In some cases, a single pump (simplex) system may not be sufficient… or in locations such as finished basements or areas where valuables are kept, you may wish to instal a BACK UP SUMP PUMP SYSTEM (duplex). These are available with back up battery power (for power outages during storms), alarms that can notify you or your alarm monitoring company and systems which require no power at all… for out buildings, landscaping “yard floods” or temporary structures.
