How to Unjam Your Garbage Disposal

A jammed garbage disposal can be frustrating, but often, you can fix it yourself with a few simple steps. This happened to our social media manager Deb recently, and she was able to fix it herself! Here’s how to safely unjam your disposal and keep it running smoothly.

1. Cut the Power: Start by turning off the power to the disposal. Unplug it from the wall, or if it’s hardwired, turn off the breaker in your fuse box. Safety first!

2. Check the Reset Button: Garbage disposals have a reset button underneath. Press it to see if this resolves the jam. If it immediately trips, there’s likely still something stuck. The photo shows the red reset button. Try pushing it in (as you would reset a GFC outlet). You can see the hole in the center where an Allen wrench can fit also.

3. Use an Allen Wrench: Most disposals come with a hex-shaped hole on the bottom. A proper size Allen wrench comes with most garbage disposals. It’s also called a “zigzag” wrench, and is usually 1/4 inch. Insert an Allen wrench and turn it clockwise and counterclockwise. This movement often dislodges debris causing the jam.

4. Look Inside: With a flashlight, check for visible obstructions from the top. Be careful not to use your fingers; instead, use long-handled tongs or pliers to remove stuck items. Never stick your hand inside!

5. Test It Out: Once cleared, plug the disposal back in and turn the power on. Run cold water and turn on the disposal. If it’s still jammed, avoid forcing it – the motor could overheat.

Prevent Future Jams: Avoid putting fibrous, starchy, or hard materials like eggshells, coffee grounds, or potato peels down the disposal. Running cold water while it’s in use is necessary to helps move items along and prevents clogs.

Following these steps can often fix minor jams and save you a service call. With regular maintenance and careful use, your disposal can stay jam-free for years!
