Plumbing from the Latin

“Plumber” and “Plumbing” are words that you may wonder where they come from. It originated with the Roman Empire, with the word “plumbum” meaning lead. They did all of their conduits and drain systems in lead pipe – which is not used in today’s jobs. Lead leaches into the water supply and is dangerous for public consumption. There is a big effort across the country to replace city water mains and other supply lines, to prevent a situation like we have seen in Flint, Michigan.

But – we still use the words plumber and plumbing to refer to water and gas piping projects!
